Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a "Registered Dietitian" & a "Nutritionist"?

Registered Dietitians (RDs) in Ontario are regulated healthcare professionals who have earned an accredited 4-year or equivalent degree specializing in nutrition & dietetics, have completed a dietetic internship or equivalent supervised practical training AND have successfully passed the Canadian Dietetic Registration Examination (CDRE). By seeing a Registered Dietitian, you can rest assured that you're getting the most up-to-date, evidence-based nutrition advise to help you make healthy lifestyle & food choices.

In Ontario, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. No formal nutrition training is required & their title is not protected or regulated. Because of this, education, training & experience can vary widely. In Ontario, health benefits usually cover Registered Dietitians however, not nutritionists.

Are private practice dietitians covered by extended health plans?

Services by a Registered Dietitian (RD) are often covered by extended health care plans (ex. Green Shield, Sunlife Financial, Manulife, The Great-West Life, Blue Cross, etc.). Plans vary & some even provide up to $1000/year in coverage for dietitian services! Be sure to call your insurance company to inquire about your individual health insurance plan. If your plan does not cover services from a Registered Dietitian, save your receipt as services provided by a Registered Dietitian are tax deductible in Ontario.
